Super Easy Pretzel Berry Homemade Trail Mix

February 25, 2018 by Jennifer 1 Comment

If you’re anything like us when it comes to snacks, you’re always looking for that magic combination of healthy and tasty. And tasty means something the kids will eat and LIKE. And this Super easy Pretzel Berry Homemade Trail Mix is the perfect snack to take on any hike, road trip, or when you take the kids camping.

What a perfect lunch, after school, camping, or hiking snack this pretzel berry homemade trail mix would be! #homemadetrailmix #diytrailmix #makeyourowntrailmix

I’ve always like the idea of buying a big bag of trail mix to have on hand, because in theory all the components in there are good, and good for you. I have a tough time, however, finding one that even I think tastes good, much less the kids. There’s always one or two ingredients that aren’t my favorite (I’m very particular about my dried fruits).

Then one day it dawned on me. This isn’t precision baking. It’s tossing ingredients together into a bag and shaking them up. To be more specific, it’s tossing ingredients you and your kids like and want to eat into a bag and shaking them up.

When you’re experimenting with different trail mix ingredients, you’ll want to make sure you have a good combination of sweet and salty, chewy and crunchy.

I’m not a huge fan of raisins, so for this combination I’m using dried cranberries and dried blueberries.

A good old roasted peanut adds great flavor, and doesn’t break the bank like other nuts can do.

For the chocolate, I like to use a larger dark chocolate chip.

And the ingredient with a twist, that you won’t often find in traditional store-bought trail mix, is pretzels. I absolutely love both the flavor and the crunch that pretzels add to the mix.

And for me, that’s it. I’m done. No mas. It may not seem like that’e enough to make a tasty trail mix. But I promise you, it’s plenty.

Now all you do is place the ingredients into a bag, and gently mix together well.

You could leave it all in the one big bag or container you mixed it in, or you can divvy portions out into these easy DIY reusable snack bags. That way each kid (and grown up) can keep track of whose is whose. The individual bags are also perfect to throw in a backpack for a little energy boost on the hiking trail (and use these handy DIY Camping Wipes from Gym Craft Laundry to clean up after yourself).

Homemade Snack Bags

My EXTREMELY picky 2 year old son went nuts over this stuff. The last camping trip we went on he could not get enough. It’s also become one of my absolute favorite trail mix combinations. For me, it’s the pretzels that make it!

Love that description - tossing it in a bag and shaking it up. Isn't that the best way to make a fun snack for the kids? I need to find dried blueberries, too. That sounds so tasty!
