Have you ever heard of a Frito Pie, or sometimes called a walking taco? It brings me back to my childhood in the South. They sell them at every sporting event, fair, and festival.
The original is basically just a single serve bag of corn chips, open it up, and pour on some chili (no beans), and cheese sauce. How can something so basic and bad for you, be so damn delicious? I’ve taken the general idea, and turned it into one of our camping staples.
I call it a Fancy Camping Frito Pie because there are a few more ingredients added than the OG mentioned above. I don’t feel like it takes away from the nostalgic origins though, only elevates it into something you can easily make while you’re camping (or heck, even if you’re just at home).
Another winning point, you can buy more wholesome ingredients for this homemade version of the Frito Pie than the classic cheap chili and cheese sauce. I got everything seen here from Trader Joe’s using minimally processed, and mostly all natural ingredients.
