We started making our own croutons when I got sick of throwing away stale bread we never finished. Once we realized how easy it was, we rarely buy store bought croutons anymore. You can mix up the herbs and seasonings to make different flavors. For instance, crush some fresh rosemary and sprinkle dry sage instead of the Italian Herb seasoning for more of a holiday flavor.
Ingredients
- 1/2 to 1 loaf of stale bread (even better is it's a mixture of different types of bread, whatever you have leftover)
- Olive Oil
- 1 Tbs Italian Seasoning
- 1/4 cup Grated Parmesan
- 2 tsp Salt
- 2 tsp Pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees
- Roughly chop up the stale bread to the size you want your croutons to be
- Put them in a mixing bowl
- Drizzle with olive oil, enough to coat the very top layer of bread
- Sprinkle seasoning, Parmesan, salt and pepper on top
- Toss to coat
- Layer on a baking sheet, make sure the bread cubes are spread out and not piled on top of each other
- Bake for 6 minutes or until the tops start to brown
- Using tongs, shuffle the bread cubes around a bit
- Bake for about 5 more minutes
- Keep a close eye on them as they will burn quickly
